Fertility Information
Can anyone give me information about Demeter-Goddess of grain and fertility?
Need some information about her, what type of society existed, how was religion/spiritually used in that society and also how and why that goddess was worshiped.

Demeter is from Greek mythology. So the society we are dealing with in this situation is the Ancient Greeks. The Ancient Greeks were polytheistic and they had many gods and goddesses that they believed in and worshiped. The Greeks say that it was because of Demeter that we have seasons. The gist of the story is that Demeter’s daughter, Persephone, was “stolen” by Hades (god of the underworld/dead) to be his wife. A deal was worked out that Persephone would be with Demeter for part of the year and then go back to be with Hades the other part of the year. So, when it is cold and snowing (winter) Persephone is going back to be with Hades and this causes Demeter to be sad; which is why it is cold and snows. When it’s warm and sunny (summer) Persephone is living with Demeter.
